Miles Medical Company was founded in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1884, and was acquired in 1978
as an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Bayer AG in Germany. Miles Laboratories was
later merged with Bayer's other major U.S. interests to form Miles, Inc. in 1992. Hence,
the company changed its name to Bayer in 1995
